New rodenticide scheme - What does it mean for you?
New rodenticide scheme - What does it mean for you?

1st October - changes to selling of rat and mice baits in our stores

Under the introduction of the new stewardship scheme for rodenticides – CRRU (the Campaign for Repsonsible Rodenticide Use) – all larger packs of products (typically over 1.5kg) such as Neorsorexa, Country UF, TomCat and others, will now only be available for us to sell for ‘professional use’.

So what does that mean for you?

To continue to purchase products of that nature, you will need to either:

  • Complete a declaration as a member of an approved Farm Assurance Scheme OR
  • Complete a declaration to say that you have undergone suitable training.

The good news is that you only need to complete your declaration once with us and once we have that on file, you will be able to continue to seamlessly purchase your chosen product. You just have to update us should your circumstances change.

The response to our LANTRA approved training courses by our shareholders and members has been beyond our expectations with the first 6 dates now sold out. We will be looking to try to establish some more dates for those who require training, especially if not Farm Assured, so please continue to let your local branch know of your interest in this. If you cannot wait for that, your options will be to buy smaller packs of rodent product from us or alternatively take the online LANTRA exam yourself.

Mole Avon sell Crediton site to local business The Bike Shed

It has been announced this week that following its purchase of land at Wellparks in Crediton, Mole Avon Trading has completed the sale of their existing site on Mill Street in Crediton to local business, The Bike Shed. Already with 5 locations throughout Devon, the Crediton Bike Shed was born out of MRS Motor Spares in 1994.

‘It has been great to have found a local growing business to be able to sell our existing Mill Street site to, furthering their base as a business here in Crediton where they first established, just as we have been able to do in the acquisition of the land at Wellparks near to Tesco,’ commented Mike Haines, managing director of Mole Avon Trading. ‘We are also fortunate that we will be able to continue to trade from our existing Mill Street store whilst the process of building the new store is completed, something we are now devoting much time and energy to complete at the earliest possible opportunity.’

‘We have no firm plans but lots of ideas on what we will do with the Mill Street site. We have taken the opportunity to purchase this prime piece of land from Mole Avon with an open mind as to its future use. With the changes in the political and economic landscape upon us at the moment who knows what the situation will be in two years time but for the time being we are delighted to be able to allow Mole Avon to continue to trade from its existing site whilst they progress their new development,’ said Mike Sanders, owner of The Bike Shed.

Mole Avon engaged the services of Vickery Holman Property Services as advisors on the disposal of the site some time ago. Whilst a variety of options were reviewed along the way, this sale has resulted in a solution for both parties that fits their immediate business needs.

These are exciting times for Crediton and the local population with two local businesses looking to invest significant sums of money into the town for the benefit of its population and that of the surrounding communities.

Wellparks Celebration
Wellparks Celebration

This week we unveiled a new site in Crediton where our new multi-million pound Mole Avon Town and Country Store will be built.

Wendy Stevens (Store Manager of the Crediton Store) and some of her team were there to celebrate along with our chairman, managing director, some of the board of directors and staff from the support centre and Town & Countrywear in Crediton.

The land at Wellparks on Exeter Road is where we will relocate from the current smaller site on Mill Street in the near future. We have been on the Mill Street site in Crediton since 1973 and have been keen to move to a suitable local site for many years.

This will be our biggest investment in the business to-date and we are pleased to be making major investment in the Town. "We have invested in our Okehampton and Axminster sites over the past three decades and it is great that we have secured the site at Wellparks which will provide a solid platform for future growth” says Mike Haines, Managing Director of Mole Avon, “This development will safeguard existing jobs and create a number of new employment opportunities for the people of Crediton and the surrounding rural area.

“We will finally be able to increase the breadth and depth of our product offering as well as looking into adding additional services and support for our core customer categories” continues Mr Haines, “This will enable us to serve our traditional farmer base alongside the wider community making us the local rural retailer of choice.”

“I am delighted that Mole Avon has taken another significant step forward in the process of redeveloping our Crediton store by marking the start of earth works on the site we recently acquired at Wellparks” says John Lee, chairman of the board of directors for Mole Avon Trading Limited, “Our new Managing Director, Mike Haines and his management team have been charged with building and delivering a state of the art store which will improve the retail experience for all our customers while maintaining our range of goods for the agricultural and rural community. This development, which will be the largest investment in the company’s history, is a strong indication of our commitment to Crediton and the surrounding area”.

Work on the new access road and associated works are planned to be under way during the autumn.
